Apparently my Turbonetics has been blown up for a while, I just didn't notice it. I put the stocker back on this past weekend & the truck actually moves now. Cleans up the smoke nicely, EGT's are lower & climb much slower. The TN unit is under warranty, although I don't know how much that'll help. I'll get it sent in next week then probably wait for a while to get it back. Once I do, I'll try & sell it, but I doubt I'll have much luck, we'll see. I think I'll buy an ATS compressor housing, try to find an OE compressor wheel (I've got a wicked wheel right now, anyone want to trade for stock?), and maybe put a 1.0 turbine housing on it. That ought to do just fine. I kept the high flow outlet (EBPV delete) & non EBPV pedestal. I think those together with the Turbo Master Wastegate controller help a lot with keeping the EGT's down.
Oil temps dropped maybe 5 degrees, so they're still a little high, but we'll see how it tows tomorrow.

| I did a boost leak test before I took everything apart & at about 15 psi, something near the turbo started making a high pitched squeal, like the sound that is used for old TV test patterns. The pressure dropped like a rock too, so I know there was a leak somewhere. I sprayed the boots on the plenums first, but there was no leaking there. Sprayed all the other IC boots & nothing. So I sprayed the entire turbo. Nothing. I thought maybe the new IC had a hole, but the noise was for sure coming from the turbo/pedestal area. I don't know what it was, maybe air escaping through the shaft area & going down the oil passages, or out the DP, I don't know. When I got it off, there was no oil in the compressor or turbine, but if felt like there was a little play in the shaft, and when I tried to spin the compressor wheel, it would move, but the second my finger broke contact with the wheel, the movement stopped. A ball bearing turbo should spin for several seconds, even the stock (journal bearing) turbo spins freely for a few seconds. So that's why it doesn't spool up, doesn't clear up the smoke, keeps my EGT's high, etc. For what I'm doing, the stock turbo with the mods I mentioned above are plenty. Now if I ever decide to put in some real rods... Last edited on Fri Aug 29th, 2008 12:05 am by sandnut

| With the OE turbo installed, there are no boost leaks, so if there was something with a boot, I fixed it. The IC is good & the bad turbo is gone.

| Ben, didn't you install that turbo pretty recently? How did you go about doing the actual boost leak test? I've never seen it done before.

The turbo went in sometime in October. There have been a lot of problems with it, so much so that apparently Turbonetics has stopped making them.
As far as the test, I have this. You put it on the turbo, attach an air compressor & slowly pump some air in it, then look for leaks using soapwater. there is some leakdown, as air escapes through the cylinder with open valves, but a boost leak loses pressure really quick.

Ah, ok, Thats real similar to a plumbing leakdown test plug setup. Hey are you sure the turbo wasn't made in China?,,, look for the stamp,,,
